SUMMARY:Society for Freshwater Science 2026 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Freshwater Science 2026 Annual Meeting will be held May 17–21 in Spokane\, Washington. \nFor more information or to register\, visit: SFS Annual Meeting | Society for Freshwater Science \n\n\n\n\nGathering to build resilient watersheds and communities.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are in a time of rapid and often unpredictable change. Freshwater ecosystems and the organisms that rely on them are threatened by a multitude of interacting stressors. Simultaneously\, human communities that depend upon freshwater ecosystems are struggling to adapt to environmental\, social\, and economic stressors. Members of the Society for Freshwater Science work tirelessly to understand these environmental changes and the associated benefits provided by freshwaters. Meeting these challenges requires the entire freshwater science community and an understanding of what maintains the resilience of freshwater ecosystems\, and how to strengthen ties with the people that live near and depend upon freshwater ecosystems. \nThe 2026 meeting will be held in Spokane\, Washington\, near Spokane Falls\, a historic gathering place since well before European colonization. The theme is “Gathering to build resilient watersheds and communities”. Attendees are encouraged to tell their stories of the wonders of freshwater ecosystems as well as how their work contributes to ecosystem resilience. They also want to challenge attendees to reflect on how we can support the resilience of ourselves and our own scientific and regional communities. The foundation for this goal is set by hosting plenaries that weave together stories of the interdependence of freshwater ecosystems and humans\, and the responses and resilience of both to issues such as pollution\, dams\, and climate change.

SUMMARY:Genomic Surveillance of Zebra Mussel Populations Using Genotyping by Sequencing (free webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Webinar Series \nWebinar: Genomic Surveillance of Zebra Mussel Populations Using Genotyping by Sequencing\nDate: Jul 8\, 2026 \nTime: 11:00 AM Pacific Time (US and Canada) \nRegister here: Webinar Registration – Zoom \nZebra mussels have expanded to at least 32 states in the USA\, and the cost of prevention and mitigation of zebra mussel infestations continues to grow. Timely information on sources of spread is critical for advising prevention efforts. Previous research carried out by our group utilized population genomics to characterize zebra mussels in >60 waterbodies to infer infestation scenarios and source waters among MN lakes. We are expanding this analysis to include newly infested lakes in Minnesota and throughout the Upper Mississippi River Basin\, making this information accessible through an online web app to help inform AIS management strategies.

SUMMARY:Salmon Data Discovery Tool - Data Loading Working Session
DESCRIPTION:Are you tired of wasting time searching for data\, or getting emails asking for the same data set? Do you have useful data products you would like to make a public resource? \nSalmon Data Discovery Tool (SDDT) was created as a joint partnership between NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center and Pacific State Marine Fisheries Commission to create a public repository for all types of salmon related data products. \nThe data discovery tool provides a single location to hold data across ecosystems (freshwater\, estuary\, marine) and data types (documents\, data files\, derived data products\, spatial data\, GitHub links) relevant to Pacific Salmon. Many of these datasets exist in agency reports or databases maintained by external agencies or groups (e.g.\, states\, tribes\, Pacific Salmon Commission\, Pacific Fisheries Management Council)\, but are not centralized\, or generally accessible to the public. SDDT changes this by providing a single centralized hub for the salmon science community. \nPlease visit https://sddt.psmfc.org/ to explore the site and start loading your files! To reach out with more questions\, email SDDT@psmfc.org. We can help with uploading datasets\, reports\, R code\, spatial files\, and others to the Salmon Data Discovery Tool. \nClick here to Join a July virtual working session: \nJuly 9: 10:00am – 11:00am \nJuly 14: 1:00pm – 2:00pm \nJuly 29: 11:00am – 12:00pm \nDuring this one hour working session\, we will help guide you loading data\, documents and/or links to the Salmon Data Discovery Tool. Please come prepared with a dataset\, document or link to upload.

DESCRIPTION:Columbia Basin Sustainable Water Coalition Stakeholder Meetings\nJuly 16\, 2026 Stakeholder Meeting \nThe July 2026 CBSWC Stakeholder meeting will be an in person only meeting in Davenport\, WA. \nMeeting Topic | Lincoln County Water Purveyor Listening Session \nLocation | Davenport Memorial Hall\, 511 Park St\, Davenport (In Person Only!) \nTime | 10:30 am – 12:30 pm \nThis upcoming Water Purveyor Listening Session is a critical piece of the work that Lincoln Conservation District (LCCD) is conducting with a grant from the Washington Department of Ecology’s Water Resources Program to develop the Mid-Columbia Basin Drought Preparedness Plan. This project focuses on Franklin\, Lincoln\, Adams\, and Grant (FLAG) counties and seeks to identify sustainable solutions that improve water resiliency across this large geographic region.  \nThe project builds upon work that began several years ago through the CBSWC\, whose mission is to “address potable groundwater supply issues by creating locally driven recommendations that influence water management and policy\, directing resources toward sustainable water solutions.” \nWith groundwater levels continuing to decline in parts of the region\, the Drought Preparedness Plan aims to better understand the challenges facing municipal and small community water systems. The project will help raise awareness\, encourage action\, support regional groundwater planning efforts\, and identify opportunities for new or alternative water sources. \nTo keep this important work moving forward\, the CBSWC Board meets monthly\, while stakeholder meetings are held every other month and are open to regional stakeholders and members of the public. \nFind out more here: https://www.cbswc.org/meetings \nProject partners\, including Landau Associates\,GeoEngineers\, and Water Insecurity Solutions\, have been working to assess community characteristics\, climate and drought history\, water availability\, groundwater declines\, and associated health risks and disparities. A key component of the project is community engagement\, including outreach to Tribal Nations and overburdened communities throughout the project area. \nThe final Drought Preparedness Plan will include recommended drought mitigation projects and a funding matrix designed to help water purveyors identify financial resources for projects that increase drought resilience and long-term water security. \nIt is encouraging to see that efforts are already underway to reduce reliance on groundwater in the region. One notable example is the Odessa Groundwater Replacement Program (OGWRP)\, which is helping provide alternative water supplies in areas impacted by declining aquifers. \nAs the project enters the community engagement phase\, the participation of local water purveyors\, as well as Tribal and non tribal community members\, is invaluable. Your experiences and insights are critical to understanding how drought affects livelihoods\, communities\, and the environment\, and they will help shape future solutions.

SUMMARY:2026 ALASKA GEOSUMMIT
DESCRIPTION:2026 ALASKA GEOSUMMIT\n\nWhen: September 21–23\, 2026\nWhere: Alyeska Resort — Girdwood\, Alaska \nThe 2026 Alaska GeoSummit will be held at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood\, Alaska\, one of the state’s iconic destinations\, located just 40 miles south of Anchorage and surrounded by the Chugach Mountains\, glaciers\, and coastal rainforest. This year\, the GeoSummit moves to Alyeska Resort to provide a more immersive setting that reflects Alaska’s scale\, complexity\, and opportunity as a proving ground for next-generation geospatial technologies. \nThis year’s venue is deliberately smaller in scale and richer in character\, designed to foster focused exchange\, spontaneous collaboration\, and meaningful connection among attendees. \nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\nFull refunds are available for cancellations made more than 60 days before the event. Ticket transfers anytime prior to the event. \n\n\n\n\nPlease note: Your confirmation email contains a direct link to book your hotel room at Alyeska Resort at the discounted rate of $229/night. If you don’t receive the email or can’t find the link\, please contact Sue at akgeosummit@gmail.com. \nVisit the 2026 Alaska GeoSummit website for more information. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNavigating the Paradigm Shift in Geospatial\n\nAI and autonomous systems are rapidly transforming how we understand\, interact with\, and make decisions about the world. At the core of these advances are location-based technologies and geospatial data\, which provide the critical context that makes these systems actionable. Earth observation\, cloud-native infrastructure\, Geo/AI\, and emerging agentic systems are converging at an unprecedented pace. \nThe 2026 Alaska GeoSummit focuses on what this convergence means in practice—organizational readiness\, workforce implications\, and how these technologies reshape decision-making across sectors. \nThe technology is here\, and innovation is accelerating. Yet many organizations remain caught between recognizing the need to adopt and lacking the operational\, technical\, or governance readiness to do so. This conference is designed to close that gap—moving beyond awareness to actionable pathways for implementation. \nJoin us for keynotes from global technology leaders—Dr. Nadine Alameh (founder of LunateAI and former CEO of the Open Geospatial Consortium) and Dr. Amy Rose (CTO of the Overture Maps Foundation)—alongside Alaska explorer and wilderness safety expert Luc Mehl\, who will frame how he uses geospatial technologies to enables safe adventuring and discovery in remote Alaska. Conference sessions and strategic discussions will move past talking about innovation to tackling real readiness gaps.
