DESCRIPTION:  Identify which genetic data fields could be added to existing data systems to enhance access to genetic data and opportunities to leverage the complimentary nature of data from different mark-recovery estimates.

JUSTIFICATION:  Since initial proposals emerged in 2003, efforts to establish a regional West Coast and Pacific Northwest repository for genetic data, including genetic stock identification (GSI) and parentage-based tagging (PBT) data, have continued to evolve. Renewed in 2026, this initiative seeks to build on existing regional databases and decades of research to improve data accessibility, strengthen collaborative analyses, and support informed fisheries management decisions. This scoping effort will identify the steps and challenges associated with developing a shared genetic data system that complements existing tools such as coded-wire tagging (CWT) while expanding the scientific value of fisheries assessment and monitoring.

TASK APPLICATION:  The goal of this task is to scope out the method and feasibility of collaboratively adding genetic data fields to an existing data system to facilitate genetic data sharing and connection with other mark-recovery efforts. CWT and GD are both useful and established methodologies, creating complementary data and answering different questions. 

DELIVERABLES:

    • Additional data table included into regional data systems
        • Complete list of genetics data fields and metadata
        • Complete controlled vocabulary to standardize data
    • Complete and published controlled vocabulary to complement the new data
    • Implemented Genetic Data table within regional databases
    • Guide for data submission and ongoing maintenance
