SAR and SAS in CAX Review and Revision Task

DESCRIPTION: The Independent Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) review of available smolt‑to‑adult return (SAR) and smolt‑to‑adult survival (SAS) data revealed some clarification is needed for data submitted as SAR to CAX.

JUSTIFICATION: The PNAMP Fish Monitoring Work Group is launching a task team to address challenges highlighted in the recent ISAB review of smolt‑to‑adult return (SAR) and smolt‑to‑adult survival (SAS) metrics in regional datasets. This team focuses on evaluating the natural and hatchery origin SAR Data Exchange Standard (DES) fields and submitted data to distinguish between SAR and SAS data in the Coordinated Assessments Data Exchange (CAX).

TASK OUTCOMES:  

The group will: 

• • Review the current DES descriptions of SAR for both hatchery and natural‑origin fish 
  • Discuss challenges and potential improvements
  • Develop revised DES language that reflects group consensus 
  • Present recommendations to the Data Exchange Development Team (DDT) for adoption under the CA DES Revision Procedures (https://www.streamnet.org/des_process-v-20210510/) 
  • Provide guidance for CAX data providers to support consistent and comparable SAR/SAS reporting
